There are many ways to save money on DIY projects for your home - one being to buy in the materials yourself. Having done just that with the installation of oak stair parts, let me give you another example. I have access to extruded polystyrene, and wish to install this in my home. The main need is time to obtain the materials. I would like to add a very thick layer of this in the attic. I also have access to a large quantity of particle board. This I would use to create more living space, and thus increase the value of my house, as it is valued by the square foot. A person could also combine these two products to make something like a pre-fab wall. This could be used for making an outdoor pool house, which would also be handy. There are also many readers digest books which have ideas that these products will work with.
